PBI provides life-saving protection and catalytic support for women’s rights activists, Indigenous leaders, LGBTIQ+ groups, environmentalists and other human rights defenders in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, while advocating for lasting changes to laws and policies.
We are seeking an experienced and motivated UK Advocacy Officer to lead our policy advocacy on corporate accountability and human rights defenders, as well as generating preventative and reactive actions from the UK government and other stakeholders to support activists at risk.
The candidate will have successfully implemented advocacy/campaign strategies and have strong written and spoken communication skills. They will have vision to co-build our UK advocacy strategy and lead our new business and human rights programme focused on bringing grassroots voices to policymaking spaces in order to advocate for policies and practises on corporate accountability.

About the Role: You will be responsible for designing and implementing advocacy strategies to engage and influence the UK government and parliament to act on specific and immediate cases, as well as on longer-term policy change. You will liaise with PBI’s global staff, human rights defenders, and UK & International NGOs and allies, to develop creative strategies to change policies and practise related to corporate accountability and human rights defender protection. You will represent PBI UK in Westminster, in NGO coalitions and in other advocacy and strategy spaces internally and externally, often working alongside visiting environmental and human rights activists from Africa, Asia and Latin America..
Responsibilities include:
Advocacy on Corporate Accountability – 45%
PBI UK works with affected communities and grassroots activists to press for improved laws, policies and practice related to corporate accountability. This includes advocacy within the Corporate Justice Coalition (CJC) for a strong UK law to make human rights and environmental due diligence mandatory. We bring the voices of land, environmental and Indigenous defenders to the UK to advocate for action to combat the violations their communities face.
- Lead the design, implementation and evaluation of advocacy strategies and activities
- Represent PBI in the Corporate Justice Coalition and contribute to their strategy and actions
- Liaise with allied NGOs to organise visits of - and activities with - grassroots activists and leaders
- Produce high quality advocacy tools including briefing papers, talking points & social media posts
- Build and maintain a network of stakeholders in the UK Parliament, government & civil society.
Advocacy on specific countries and cases – 30%
Whether reacting to emergencies or preventing abuses from occurring in the first place. PBI UK liaises with our front-line offices and human rights defenders in Africa, Asia and Latin America to then advocate for the UK government and other stakeholders to take action on specific issues.
- Design advocacy strategies to ensure UK support for PBI’s priority countries, issues and cases
- Plan, organise and implement advocacy tours to the UK by human rights defenders
- Implement ‘activations’ in the UK to generate rapid responses to global emergencies
- Digest complex information from a range of countries and convert it into advocacy outputs
- Monitor and track our advocacy’s impact, both in the UK and around the world.
Advocacy on the UK’s overall approach to supporting human rights defenders – 10%
PBI UK was instrumental in advocating for the UK to adopt its 2019 policy ‘UK Support for Human Rights Defenders’; however its implementation has been sporadic. Together with a loose coalition of allied NGOs, our focus is now to strengthen its implementation as part of a holistic FCDO strategy.
- Implement advocacy strategies with the Government, civil service, and a range of politicians
- Document UK embassy actions for human rights defenders; share and encourage good practise
- Provide technical inputs on UK policy on human rights defenders and civic space.
Other – 15%
- Contribute to designing and evolving PBI’s international advocacy strategy
- Liaise with the PBI’s lawyers’ network to generate legal support for human rights defenders
- Contribute to donor reporting and fundraising activities
- Contribute to keeping PBI’s databases up-to-date
- Represent PBI UK in PBI’s international Advocacy Working Group
